Management and Leadership free essay sample
Management and leadership are two separate skills needed to control the function and direction of task. Separating the definition of leadership and management is a difficult task. Management is defined as Planning, Organizing and Controlling (POC) all resources required to achieve goals of the organizational strategic business plans established by senior management in an efficient and effective manner. Those resources required include all things that are foundational in cost accounting including material, labor and overhead. The correlation of foundational items with the requisite skills of those assigned to complete tasks are management requirements. Supervisors plan work schedules based on the plan given to middle management who has devised a tactical plan to meet their part of the assigned strategic plan. Upper management has formulated plans to meet the internal or external requirements that are planned for by the Board of Directors. Transactional leaders, according to Burns is a ââ¬Å"â⬠¦transactional process where leaders and followers engage in a mutual process of raising one another to higher levels of morality and motivation. â⬠(2009) According to Satterles (2009), ââ¬Å"Strategic managers, commonly known as top manager, make long-term decisions concerning the organization missionâ⬠(p. 4). According to Satterlee (2009), ââ¬Å"Tactical managers, supervised by strategic mangers and known as middle managers, are responsible for explaining the goals of the strategic managers and providing insight to the first line managersâ⬠P. According to Satterlee (2009), ââ¬Å"Operational manager, known as a first line manager, is responsible for supervising non-managerial workers and take direction from the tactical manager about how to accomplish goals by employing plansâ⬠(p. 4). Organization of the plan is a determination of what is required to accomplish the tasks and what is needed to complete the task (Saterlee, 2009). Controlling is the review of the task to confirm benchmarks are met in the completion of the planned task while making any required corrections between the actual task and the expected results. Those who are charged with task review are classified as strategic managers, tactical managers and operational managers. (Saterlee, 2009) Transformational leaders are more concerned with disseminating a message to those that are part their chain of command. The transformational leaders is usually concerned with insuring followers are issue aware, focused on the concern of the followers and organizational goals and encourages those in the chain of command. Riggioââ¬â¢s (2009) found ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ transformational leaders focus on followers, motivating them to high levels of performance, and in the process, help followers develop their own leadership potentialâ⬠, which is a very important skill that helps stakeholders understand and accept the plan. Historical and Organizational Perspectives According to Satterlee (2009), ââ¬Å"Frank and Lillian Gilbreth pioneered option studies and the psychology of management. The Gilbrethââ¬â¢s worked to eliminate useless effort by studying hand and body motions that a worker used to complete a taskâ⬠(p. 40). A study of each worker and their movement to complete a job was a plan developed plan to eliminate inefficient motions of the worker which resulted in greater efficiency of work performed.
